A Petri dish is a shallow cylindrical glass or plastic lidded dish that biologists use to culture cells. It was invented by German bacteriologist Julius Richard Petri in 1877 and is named after him. The dish is used to contain a growth medium, such as agar, on which microorganisms can be cultured. Petri dishes are widely used in laboratories for experiments involving bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms.
