The term 'Tierra del Fuego' is an archipelago located at the southernmost tip of South America. It is composed of two main islands, Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and Isla de los Estados, as well as several smaller islands. The name translates to 'Land of Fire' and is thought to have been given by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, who noted the many fires lit by the native Yaghan people. The archipelago is now divided between Chile and Argentina.
