Defunct carrier is a term used to describe an airline that has ceased operations. Two examples of defunct carriers are EASTERN and TWA, both of which were major airlines in the United States. EASTERN was founded in 1926 and operated until 1991, while TWA was founded in 1930 and operated until 2001. Both airlines were known for their extensive domestic and international routes, but eventually went out of business due to financial difficulties.
