The term defensive position in fencing is often referred to as a tierce. This is a guard position in which the fencer holds their sword arm outstretched and the point of the sword is held up and slightly to the side. This position is used to defend against an attack, as it allows the fencer to quickly parry or counterattack. It is also used to deceive the opponent by making them think the fencer is about to attack.
