The defendant in a 1925 trial was John Scopes, a high school teacher who was charged with violating Tennessee's Butler Act which prohibited the teaching of evolution in public schools. Scopes was found guilty and fined $100, but the verdict was later overturned on a technicality. The trial became known as the Scopes Monkey Trial and is widely regarded as a landmark case in the history of science and religion.
