He was born in London in 1828 and his middle name, Gabriel, was taken from the archangel in the Bible. His first name, Dante, was taken from the Italian poet Dante Alighieri. Paolo is the Italian form of Paul, which was the name of one of Rossetti's brothers. ECCE is a Latin phrase meaning 'BEHOLD' or 'lo, here'.
