Reefs are the most common type of coral formation, and are typically found in shallow, warm waters. Cays are small, low-lying islands made up of sand and coral fragments. Atolls are ring-shaped coral formations that surround a central lagoon. All three types of coral formations provide habitats for a variety of marine life.
