The Congo Ape, also known as the Bonobo, is a species of great ape found in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is one of the two species making up the genus Pan, the other being the Common Chimpanzee. Bonobos are distinguished from chimpanzees by their relatively peaceful nature, lack of aggression, and strong social bonds. Bonobos are endangered due to habitat destruction and poaching, and their population is estimated to be fewer than 10, 000 individuals.
