An EAR is necessary for a conductor to listen to the music and make sure that the musicians are playing in time and in tune. A BATON is a tool used by conductors to direct the tempo, dynamics, and phrasing of an ensemble. The BATON is used to give cues to the musicians and to indicate the beginning and end of musical phrases.
