Charles Babbage was a computing pioneer who is often referred to as the 'father of the computer'. He was an English mathematician, philosopher, inventor and mechanical engineer who originated the concept of a programmable computer. Babbage is credited with inventing the first mechanical computer in the early 19th century. His Difference Engine and Analytical Engine are considered to be the first automatic computing machines.
