A commissioned naval officer is an individual who has been appointed to a position of authority in the navy. An ENSIGN is the lowest rank of commissioned officer in the United States Navy, Coast Guard, and NOAA Corps. It is equivalent to a Second Lieutenant in the Army or Marine Corps, and is just above the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. Ensigns are responsible for leading small groups of sailors and providing guidance and direction to junior officers.
