Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was an American politician, pastor, and civil rights leader who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1945 to 1971. He was the first African-American from New York to be elected to Congress. Powell was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement and was a vocal advocate for social justice and economic opportunity for African Americans. He was also a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance.
