A church dignitary is a person of high rank in the church hierarchy. A CANON is a member of the chapter of a cathedral or collegiate church, and is usually a priest. A CARDINAL is a senior ecclesiastical leader, appointed by the Pope, and is usually a BISHOP. A PRELATE is a high-ranking member of the clergy, such as an archbishop or BISHOP. A BISHOP is a senior member of the clergy, responsible for overseeing a diocese. A Provost is a senior official in a religious order, responsible for the administration of a monastery or convent. An ELDER is a lay leader in some Protestant churches, responsible for providing spiritual guidance and pastoral care.
