Cesar Chavez was an American labor leader and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers union, UFW) in 1962. He was born in Yuma, Arizona and grew up in a Mexican-American family in the San Joaquin Valley of California. He was a leader in the Delano grape strike in 1965, which led to a nationwide boycott of California grapes and the eventual recognition of the UFW as the bargaining agent for 50, 000 farm workers. Chavez also organized a march from Delano to Sacramento in 1966 to draw attention to the plight of farm workers. The march ended at the state capitol, where Chavez and his supporters held a rally in the RAVINE below the capitol building.
