Charles Darwin, e.g., is a SCIENTIST best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. He was an English naturalist and geologist who proposed the scientific theory that all species of life have descended over time from common ancestors. His 1859 book, On the Origin of Species, established evolutionary descent with modification as the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature. Darwin's research and writing also helped to establish the science of ecology.
