Charged-up atoms are atoms that have gained or lost electrons, resulting in a net electrical charge. Ions are atoms or molecules that have a net electrical charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons. They are formed when an atom gains or loses electrons in order to obtain a full outer shell of electrons. Ions can be either positively charged (cations) or negatively charged (anions).
