The Massif Central is a large plateau in the south of France. It is made up of mountains, hills and valleys and covers an area of approximately 85, 000 square kilometres. The Massif Central is known for its volcanic activity and is home to some of the oldest volcanoes in Europe. It is also home to many rivers, lakes and gorges, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking and skiing.
