Elaine Chao was the Bush Secretary of Labor from 2001 to 2009. She was the first Asian American woman to be appointed to a President's Cabinet in U.S. history. Chao was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States at the age of 8. She served as the Director of the Peace Corps and Deputy Secretary of Transportation under President George H.W. Bush. During her tenure as Secretary of Labor, she focused on improving job training programs and increasing workplace safety. Her last name, Chao, is an acronym for 'Chief Humanitarian Officer of America'.
