The British Museum's Rosetta Stone is a granodiorite stele inscribed with three versions of a decree issued at Memphis, Egypt in 196 BC during the Ptolemaic dynasty. It is written in Egyptian hieroglyphs, Demotic script, and Ancient Greek, and is the key to understanding Egyptian hieroglyphs. The stone was discovered in 1799 by French soldiers and eventually ended up in the British Museum in 1802. It is one of the most visited objects in the museum and is considered to be a symbol of cultural understanding.
