Boss Tweed Caricaturist was Thomas Nast, a German-born American cartoonist and illustrator. He is known for his satirical attacks on political corruption, particularly the Tammany Hall political machine in New York City. He is also credited with creating the modern version of the Republican Party elephant and the Democratic Party donkey. Nast's cartoons were often accompanied by the words 'GRAFT' which referred to the corrupt practices of politicians. He was also known for his illustrations of the works of Honore de Balzac, and for his illustrations of the works of George du Maurier's novel Trilby. Finally, he was also known for his illustrations of the works of Maurice de Guerin's poem La Legende de Sorel.
