Igor Sikorsky was an aviation pioneer who made significant contributions to the development of the helicopter and other aircraft. He was born in Kiev, Ukraine in 1889 and studied engineering at the Imperial Russian Navy's School of Naval Architecture. He is best known for his invention of the first successful helicopter in 1939, which he named the VS-300. He also designed the world's first four-engine airplane, the Ilya Muromets, and founded the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation in 1923. He was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1973.
