The company Atari is best known for its Asteroids game, which was released in 1979. Atari is an American video game and home computer company founded in 1972 by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney. The company was responsible for the development of some of the earliest arcade games and home video game consoles, and is credited with popularizing the use of microprocessor-based hardware and games contained on ROM cartridges. Atari's Asteroids game was a huge success, selling over 70, 000 arcade cabinets and becoming one of the most popular video games of all time.
