HERO stands for Honorary Recipient of the Exceptional Service Order, which is a medal awarded to those who have performed exceptionally meritorious service in a duty of great responsibility. GOLD stands for the GOLD Star Medal, which is awarded to members of the Army who have distinguished themselves by gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States. Finally, DSC stands for the Distinguished Service Cross, which is awarded to members of the Army who have distinguished themselves by extraordinary heroism in combat with an armed enemy force.
