An armed ship, also known as a PRIVATEER, is a vessel that is privately owned and outfitted with weapons for the purpose of engaging in warfare. Privateers were used by governments to supplement their naval forces during times of war, and were often granted letters of marque which gave them the authority to attack enemy vessels. Privateers were also used to disrupt enemy trade routes and to capture enemy ships and cargo.
