An ESNE was an Anglo Saxon slave in the early Middle Ages. They were usually owned by wealthy landowners and were used for manual labor such as farming, building, and other domestic tasks. Esnes were not allowed to own property or marry, and they could be bought and sold like any other commodity. They were considered to be of lower status than free men and women, and were subject to harsh punishments if they disobeyed their masters.
