Ancient Tokyo is the former name of the city of Tokyo, Japan. It was known as EDO until 1868 when it was renamed to Tokyo. EDO was the seat of power for the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan from 1603 to 1868. During this period, EDO grew from a small fishing village to one of the largest cities in the world. The city was home to many cultural and artistic developments, including kabuki theater and ukiyo-e woodblock prints.
