Ancient France is a term used to refer to the area of modern-day France that existed before the French Revolution. The region was inhabited by various tribes and civilizations, including the Gauls, who were the most prominent. The Gauls were a Celtic people who lived in what is now known as GAUL, or modern-day France. The Romans referred to the region as Gallia, which was later Latinized to GAUL. Alsace, a region in northeastern France, was also part of Ancient France and was known as Alsatia in the Middle Ages.
