Alvin AILEY was an American choreographer, dancer, and activist who founded the Alvin AILEY American Dance Theater in 1958. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century and is credited with popularizing modern dance. He is best known for his signature piece, Revelations, which premiered in 1960 and has since become a staple of modern dance repertoire. AILEY's work combined elements of African-American culture, such as spirituals and blues, with classical ballet and modern dance techniques. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014 for his contributions to American culture through dance.
