Alaska's first capital was Sitka, a city of five letters. Sitka is located on Baranof Island in the Alexander Archipelago of the Pacific Ocean. It was founded by Russian settlers in 1799 and served as the capital of Russian America until 1867, when Alaska was sold to the United States. After the purchase, Sitka remained the capital of the Alaska Territory until 1906, when it was moved to Juneau.
