Anna Deavere Smith is an American actress, playwright, and professor. She is best known for her roles in the films Philadelphia and The American President, as well as her award-winning one-woman shows on National Public Radio. She has also appeared in television series such as The West Wing and Nurse Jackie. Smith has received numerous awards and honors, including a MacArthur Fellowship, two Tony Award nominations, and an Obie Award.
