2009 Nobel Laureate Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people. He was recognized for his vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons, as well as his support for the promotion of democracy and human rights. Obama was the first African-American to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
