In 1983, Barbra Streisand starred in the title role of the movie Yentl. The movie was based on a short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer and was directed, co-written, and produced by Streisand. It tells the story of a young Jewish woman who disguises herself as a man in order to study the Talmud. The movie was a critical and commercial success, earning Streisand an Academy Award nomination for Best Director.
